Unless you’ve spent the last couple of years sitting in the cupboard under the stairs, you’ll already know what this hugely exciting project is all about, But if you are in the dark about it, here’s a quick update in the very first issue of our monthly newsletter…

See that hulking great eyesore at the end of Longsands Beach? That’s Tynemouth Outdoor Pool. Built in the 20s and popular with locals and holiday makers alike for over 50 years, it began to lose favour in the late 70s, and has now been in its current state for over 20 years.

Who are you?
We’re the Friends of Tynemouth Outdoor Pool – a tiny charity with a huge ambition to transform the pool into a modern, safe, public, outdoor heated swimming facility.

So what’s the plan?
Since 2012, we’ve been working hard to put a solid plan in place, by exploring sources of funding, developing a design for the site, and creating a sustainable business model. All of which will give it a long-term future as a valuable community facility – and as a must-see destination for anyone living in or visiting the North East.

How will you fund it?
That’s the million dollar question. Literally. We’ve already secured funds from Locality, raised money via well-supported fundraising events and sales of merchandise, and we’ve even had donations from the likes of Sting. Most recently, we secured £50,000 from the Coastal Revival Fund, and we’ve got plenty more ideas in the pipeline!
