Can you believe we began our fight for Tynemouth Outdoor Pool with a press call and photo shoot almost 11 years ago on Sunday 19th August 2012?!
Back then, we inspired that headline in the local press by demonstrating the incredible strength of local, regional and national support for rebuilding the pool (and not for creating a ‘flexible multi-use arena’!)
Today, with countless hours of hard work behind us and thousands more voices in support, we’ve never been closer to being able to read “POOL PLANS ARE APPROVED BY COUNCIL” in the press instead.
And, just like many of you already have done over the last few years, you can play a huge part in making this new headline a reality right now.
That’s because we’ve finally… FINALLY!… reached the point where our proposal for the pool will be considered at an upcoming planning committee meeting. Once we gain planning permission, it will unlock many more opportunities for securing the essential capital funding we need to start building this pool.
However, it’s important to remember that planning permission isn’t guaranteed. Since day one, we’ve been up against a huge number of complex challenges, and we know it’s going to be incredibly tough to get the decision we’re hoping for. And if it doesn’t go our way on the day, we’ll share more information about what we think the reasons for that might be.
So, if you were ever going to get involved, NOW is the time to do it. And if you’ve already supported, donated, or cheered the project on in some way, we’re relying on you to do it again.
All you need to do is comment on the planning portal, send an email, or write a letter to the council in support of the proposal – before June 2nd 2023. It could genuinely be the most important thing you do since the project began back in 2012.
Here’s how…
I believe the redevelopment of Tynemouth Outdoor Pool would vastly improve the south end of Longsands Beach. It would provide a fantastic amenity for local communities and visitors alike, while enhancing the immediate surroundings and providing a unique and modern facility for outdoor swimming in a safe environment.
The popularity of open air swimming has increased enormously in recent years, and lidos across the UK are being restored, rebuilt, and reused. North Tyneside Council should not miss out on this exciting opportunity.

I would like to offer my support for the above planning application, and request that the planning committee recommend that it is approved.
