2025 marks the centenary of Tynemouth Outdoor Pool. In May 1925, after 18 months of construction, as seen below, this humble site opened to great fanfare from the local community.
It’s a site that would change shape several times over the decades, with new clubhouses, fountains, and diving boards added as it moved with the times. It’s a site that has hosted galas, pageants, events, everyday swimming and visitors from near and far. As you keep telling us, it’s a much loved site that served the community faithfully for 70 years, until national leisure policy and local management saw it’s steady decay and then closure in 1995.
Since 2012, Friends of Tynemouth Outdoor Pool, along with a wealth of generous local organisations, have been working out a scheme of work to enable investment and progress to restore this iconic, but complex site. A decade of austerity, Brexit, COVID-19, Ukraine and cost of living crisis has made things interesting to say the least. We’ll share more across this year as we push for funding and decisions.
While our focus as a team remains establishing a way forward, we couldn’t let a BIG birthday go to miss!
Including the story of the pool creation, which has been slowly pieced together, we’ve a variety of initiatives happening throughout the centenary year, with collaborations continuing to materialise that authentically build value and the awareness.
And we’re all ears if you want to help!
