100 years young TODAY!
2025 marks the centenary of Tynemouth Outdoor Pool. 30th May 1925 to be exact! After 18 months of construction, this humble site opened to local community.
The detail below has been drawn from reports in the British Newspaper Archives to get a glimpse into how the pool, pond, baths were first welcomed into the world, one hundred years ago today;
CROWDS VISIT TYNEMOUTH BATHING POOL
The new swimming pool at the Long Sands proved an immense attraction and presented scenes of great animation throughout the day. Occupied from six in the morning, until well into the evening.
Hundreds of people found amusement in watching the bathers. Two boys, fully dressed, were pushed into the pool by the pressure of spectators.
A scheme that dumbfounded the critics, providing a pond as a safe place for bathing and swimming on the seashore.
Not only does the pond afford safe facilities for residents and visitors who wish to indulge in sea bathing.
It is quite ornamental in appearance and in its admirable setting at the south end of the sands, it adds considerably to the attractiveness of that part of the shore.
The use of the pool will be free.
Bathing tents at popular charges. 4d for exclusive use, 3d each person if two or more share a tent.
Hire of Deck chairs by spectators. 3d for three hours.
Bathing costumes or towels on hire. 2d each.
The water area of the bath is 180 feet long and 60 feet wide, comprising a water surface area of 1,200 square yards, which is only 10 square yards short of a quarter of an acre. The depth at the deep end is 6 feet 6 inches and at the shallow end, 3 feet and 6 inches.
Upon the two sides of the pond, there are terraced stands capable of accommodating some 2,000 spectators. It has not yet been decided whether fixed or movable seats are to be provided, but upon the terraces, seats will no doubt be placed.
The permanent dressing accommodation, lavatory and cognate facilities are not yet provided, but it is intended to erect these structures upon the area at the back of the terraces on the land at the side of the bath. The drainage will be lifted to the sewer, at higher elevation.
